Award Categories & Descriptions
The Pinecone Award
The hardest thing in film is making someone want more. This award goes to the work that hooked us in a glimpse and left us wanting the whole story.
The Fresh Take Award
A fresh take is what happens when a young filmmaker has an original idea and the nerve to chase it. These films reminded us why we got into this in the first place.
The Young Pine Award
Every great filmmaker started somewhere. This award honors the strongest work from our youngest storytellers, the ones just getting started.
The Compass Award
These films crossed oceans to be here. They remind us that a good story needs no translation.
The Loblolly Craft Award
A film is built by hands you never see. This award honors the craft behind the work: the cut, the frame, the sound that makes a story land.
The Dogwood Performance Award
The best performances make us forget we are watching a performance at all. These actors disappeared into their roles and carried us with them.
The Longleaf Award
These are our core honors, the best American films of the festival across every form.
The Heart of the Woods Award
This is the highest honor of the festival. One film, out of everything we screened this weekend, rose above them all.
The Campfire Favorite Award
No judges, no panel. Just the films that you, the audience, loved most this weekend.
Gary Parker: Impact Through Storytelling Award
Named in honor of filmmaker, producer, director, cinematographer, educator, and mentor Gary Parker, this award recognizes an individual whose work exemplifies the transformative power of storytelling. Throughout a career spanning more than five decades, Gary has dedicated himself to creating films, documentaries, broadcasts, and educational programs that inform, inspire, and strengthen communities. As the founder of production companies, film education initiatives, and numerous community-focused media projects throughout Texas, he has helped countless storytellers discover their voice and share their vision with the world.
The Gary Parker: Impact Through Storytelling Award is presented to an individual whose body of work demonstrates that stories can do more than entertain—they can educate, inspire, unite, and create meaningful positive change. This honor celebrates those who use the art of storytelling to elevate others, encourage understanding, preserve important voices, and leave a lasting impact on their communities and audiences.
Like the stories shared around a campfire beneath the Piney Woods sky, the recipient of this award reminds us that one story, told with purpose and heart, can influence generations.
